On September 6, 2025, Dr. Diene Keita, appointed only a week earlier as Executive Director of UNFPA and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire for her first official visit.
Taking place so soon after her nomination, this mission carried both symbolic and strategic weight: it was her very first step in office, and a strong signal of UNFPA’s renewed engagement in maternal health, gender equality, and youth empowerment in West Africa.
For me, as a photojournalist based in Abidjan, it was an honor and a responsibility to be entrusted with documenting this historic moment. Beyond capturing images, my role was to translate the significance of this visit into a visual story that resonates locally and internationally.
High-Level Meetings and National Partnership
During her mission, Dr. Keita held a series of high-level meetings with the country’s top authorities and partners. She was received by the Prime Minister, the First Lady of Côte d’Ivoire, and several sectoral ministers, including the Minister of Health. These encounters highlighted UNFPA’s commitment to working hand in hand with governments, institutions, and regional actors to accelerate progress on maternal health, gender equality, and youth empowerment.

Dr. Diene Keita’s first mission to Côte d’Ivoire, held just a week after her appointment, reaffirmed UNFPA’s deep commitment to the country’s health and development agenda. From policy discussions to technical visits and community voices, the mission showcased UNFPA’s multi-level approach: bridging national leadership, infrastructure support, and human stories.

For me as a photojournalist, documenting this historic week was both a professional milestone and a personal responsibility, translating the depth of this mission into visuals designed to inform, inspire, and endure.
